At Adrie van de Pas’s pig farm, the slurry feeding system is undergoing a major change. The long troughs are being removed and replaced by a Variomix automatic feeder from Verba. “I’m moving from one feeding point per pig to nearly one feeding point for every ten animals. Practical experience with this supplementary feeding method has been mixed, but I’ve seen it work very well on a large fattening pig farm. That’s why I see it as a challenge to make it a success here too.” But above all, Adrie is opting for the extra square metres he can use for rearing fattening pigs. “Instead of four batches of eight animals, I can now rear two batches of 19 fattening pigs. Every year, I can supply an additional 750 fattening pigs without increasing the barn’s floor space.”

Pig Business:
The innovative Verhees farm, located in Someren, has around 1,000 sows and 9,000 fattening pigs. The fattening pigs are reared in platform-style piggeries. With regard to slurry management, the farm is participating in the ‘Research into Mineral Concentrates’ pilot project. It is equipped with VERBA Variomix feeders. The pigs are fed small portions as frequently as possible each day via the Variomix automatic feeders. In 2017, growth stood at 860 grams per animal per day, with a feed conversion ratio of 2.25.
