At Adrie van de Pas’s pig fattening farm, the slurry feeding system is to be upgraded. The long feed troughs will be removed and a Variomix Verba automatic feeder will be installed. “I’m going to move from one feeder per pig to almost one feeder for every ten animals. Practical experience with this supplementary feeding method has been mixed, but I’ve seen it work very well on a large pig farm. That’s why I see it as a challenge to make it a success here too.” But, above all, Adrie is opting for the extra square metres he can use for rearing fattening pigs. “Instead of four batches of eight animals, I can now rear two batches of 19 fattening pigs. Each year, I can supply 750 more fattening pigs without increasing the space in the barn.”

Pig Business:
The innovative Verhees farm, located in Someren, has around 1,000 sows and 9,000 fattening pigs. The fattening pigs are reared in open-plan housing. With regard to manure management, the farm is participating in the ‘Research into Mineral Concentrates’ pilot project. There are VERBA Variomix feeders on this farm. The pigs are fed small rations daily as frequently as possible via the Variomix automatic feeders. In 2017, growth stood at 860 grams per animal per day, with a feed conversion ratio of 2.25.
